The New Sue Linnean Classifications

Let's face it, sometimes when you're onto a good thing, you have to fudge it a bit. It is customary when identifying a Sue to give it an appropriate Latin name. Now, while I am well aware that a bit of Silly Latin is all part of the joke, I'm a bit of a linguistic fussbudget. While about half the existing Sue Latin terms are okay (mixta, perfecta, impossibilis etc), there are several key Sue Latin names which while amusing, have absolutely no basis in real Latin and even border on the dreaded Fangirl Latin.
The primary noun of a Sue name (the genus) should be a real Latin word. Any adjectives that follow it can be based on modern words.

I just KNEW taking six years of Latin in high school would come in handy!

If you're like me, please feel free to use this handy guide to compile your own specific Sue Latin. This is constantly being updated as new Sues are added and classified. Please note that to REALLY do this right, you should ideally be familiar with the adjectival suffixes and basic rules of Latin noun declension and verb conjugation. And gender, let's not forget that. Latin, like most of the Romance languages, is gender-specific.

Scientific classifications also use Greek words as well. Unfortunately, I know absolutely no Greek at all, so for the purposes of this page, we'll stick to Latin. Anyone out there who DOES know ancient Greek, you can add that to the mix, too.

Given that all Sues are female, it's usually safe to just leave the ending as -a and change it to -ae when there are plural Sues. To give a hand, I've taken some of the more common Sue Latin phrases and put them into accurate Latin. Enjoy!

To make a Sue name, start with a noun(puella, dea, filia etc) then add one or two adjectives as needed

Non-Latin words can be used as adjectives. This is extremely common in flora and fauna classification and is most notably seen in tolkien, used in LOTR Sues.

Corrections of Common Sue Latin

* sidhia(elf) - this is not Latin, it's modern Irish(sidhe). The closest Latin approximation is Nympha (must be capitalised!), a spirit of the earth. Hence:
Nympha sidhea tolkiena for Legoluvvin-Sue. Nympha being the genus, sidhe denoting the species and tolkiena to denote the canon.

*shattercanonica - nope nope nope. Try regulaconfracta

*mulier - this is more a correction. It does not mean 'bitch', it just means 'woman'(as opposed to a maiden).
Try muliercula ('bimbo' lit.'little woman'),
lupa ('she-wolf') or just
canis (dog, male or female). There are ENDLESS words for 'slut' in the list below ;)

*centraquestis - nuh-uh. Neither component exists in Latin. 'cent-' is pronounced 'kent' in Latin, anyway.
mediumundi is better ('of the centre of the universe')

*moderna - modern word. In Latin, recentis means 'modern' or young'

*angstia - nope. There are a couple of alternatives.
dolor means 'suffering' (doluta is the feminine adjective),
angor means 'mental anguish'(but only of a transitory nature) and
anxietas means permanent mental anguish(as in 'Paris Hilton still lives!' anguish).
Potter fans will of course also recognise cruciatus (tormented, tortured), but that's mostly used for physical suffering. Could be handy for Abused!Sues, though.

As you can see, there needn't be a single word to cover everything when Latin's rich vocabulary can cover every single state of emotional being as well as English can. All you need is a good dictionary. I have 2 - a latin-english english-latin one and a more thorough latin-english one.

Useful Latin Words

Note on the genders(m), (f) or (n) - these are just to denote which adjectival ending to match to a noun. You CAN used praedo, a masculine noun, to mean a female robber, too, for eg. Just make sure the adjectival ending is ALSO masculine to match praedo.
